It had been seven days since Maynard's father told him he could have a puppy.

He was starting to get impatient.
Page 3
Maynard had looked at all of the puppy books, and even picked out a name.

He was going to call his puppy Sunshine
because sunshine made him happy.
Page 5
It was getting late on Sunday afternoon and Maynard’s father had been cleaning the garage all day,
Maynard wondered if they would ever go find his puppy.

Then Maynard’s Mother asked him if he was ready to go for a drive.

Maynard was very excited!

Maynard knew that the pet store had gotten a whole bunch of new puppies and they were all very, very
cute.

But when they left the house Maynard’s Mother was driving the wrong way!

Maynard was very disappointed.
Page 11
“Mommy where are we going?” Maynard said with a sad little voice.
Page 12
“We are going to a very special place, you’ll see when we get there.” Maynard’s Mother said with a little
smile on her face.
Page 13
Maynard huffed and sat back in his seat with his arms crossed and a frown on his face.
Page 14
Maynard’s frown turned into an excited smile when his Mother turned into the animal shelter.
Page 15
He let out a giggle as they walked in the door.

“These are the puppies who really need your love Maynard.” his Mother said as they went to the puppy
room.

Maynard saw him right away, “SUNSHINE!” He shouted as he ran to a pen with a little
yellow puppy jumping at the gate and yipping.

When they got home Maynard told his Father how Sunshine was a special puppy from the shelter and
how he needed the love only a boy like Maynard could give.

Maynard and Sunshine played the rest of the day in the backyard.

Then they fell asleep curled up on the couch.
